When using Gearbox , I keep getting asked to fix an error? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Administrator
For those of you that are using gearbox. When you install the web accelerator you will also need to update gearbox with the local proxy. To do this go under my computer, internet connections, and then the Proxy Panel tab. Click on the "Access the internet using a proxy server" and set the HTTP proxy equal to 127.0.0.1 with a port of 5400. If you do not do this, you may run into an infinite loop where each time you log on to the internet, you are asked to fix an error, once corrected, you have to reinstall the web accelerator for it to work.

or as an alternative:

  • Using small Gearbox icon next to clock in System Tray
  • Click on Gearbox Icon
  • Click on Support
  • Click on Diagnostics
  • Click on Edit Active Profile
  • Click on Proxy...
  • Feed the details and it updates the proxy settings across the board.

You can prevent WinPopUPs by disabling the Messenger service, however, this may leave you exposed to other security issues so this approach by itself is not recommended.

Note: Some applications: Anti-virus, SQL Job Scheduler, UPS systems, etc.. use Messenger alerts to notify you are critical system events. If you use such products, then you should leave Messenger enabled and use a firewall/router to block the PopUPs.

Here are the procedures for disabling the Messenger service on Windows 2000 and XP systems:

  • Click: Start/Settings/Control Panel
  • Open: Administrative Tools
  • Open: Services
  • Open: 'Messenger' Service
  • Click: Stop button
  • Change 'Startup Type' to MANUAL
  • Click OK to close everything
